(George Nelson, 1944): The quality of furnishings does not only manifest itself in large
objects. As important as the choice and composition of furniture,
lighting and textiles are for our sense of well-being at home. It’s the
small things – the various accessories, pictures, plants, mementos and
occasional finds we have collected – that play a major role in our
emotional attachment to the home. In recent decades only a few designers
like Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard and George Nelson, have
been aware of this. Starting with the same ideas in the mid twentieth
century they created furnishings and equipment in which small things
always had an important place. It is with this thought in mind that the
Classic Trays now being brought onto the market by the Vitra design
Museum should be viewed.

George Nelson, geboren 1908 in Hartford, Connecticut, USA, studiert Architektur an der Yale University. Ein Stipendium ermöglicht ihm 1932-34 ein Studium an der Amerikanischen Akademie in Rom. In Europa kommt er mit den Bauten und Protagonisten der Moderne in Berührung. 1935 tritt er in die Redaktion des "Architectural Forum" ein, der er bis 1944 angehört. 1944 veröffentlicht er dort einen Grundsatzartikel über Wohnungsbau und Möbeldesign, der die Aufmerksamkeit von D.J. DePree, Chef der Möbelfirma Herman Miller, erregt. Kurze Zeit später wird George Nelson Designdirektor von Herman Miller. In dieser Position, die er bis 1972 innehat, wird er zu einer Schlüsselfigur des amerikanischen Designs: Er holt Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi und Alexander Girard zu Herman Miller. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Vitra beginnt 1957. Daneben betreibt er seit 1946 sein eigenes Gestaltungsbüro und schafft einige Entwürfe, die als Ikonen des "Mid-Century-Modern" gelten. Weitere Arbeitsschwerpunkte von Nelsons Büro sind Architektur und Ausstellungsgestaltungen. George Nelson stirbt 1986 in New York. Sein Archiv befindet sich in der Obhut des Vitra Design Museums.
